Dholakia Foundation: Water Conservation Organisation Driving Sustainable Change

Dholakia Foundation is an organisation dedicated to water conservation in India. The organisation's vision is simple yet powerful - to support society and preserve the environment through charitable and conservation activities.

Established by the legendary diamond baron Savji Dholakia as the philanthropic arm of Hari Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd., we have been at the forefront of environmental conservation, embodying the spirit of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

With a commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we have made significant strides in creating a positive impact in Gujarat and across India.

We inspire people to join our efforts as we transform barren lands into thriving ecosystems and uplift communities through sustainable initiatives.

Our unique water conservation project and commitment to sustainable practices have gained international recognition. Our dedication to addressing water-related challenges and significant contributions to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) have earned us a special distinction.

We were honoured to have been an accredited water conservation organisation in India at this year's historic 2023 UN Water Conference. This global platform allowed us to highlight our water commitments and share our experiences with a diverse audience passionate about water conservation and sustainability.

Pre-Implementation Scenario: A Call for Change

Before our interventions, the region faced numerous challenges. The land was characterised by dry shrubs and scorching heat, leaving it barren for humans and wildlife.

Water scarcity plagued the area, with non-cultivated farms and reliance on borewells with high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS).

Farmers needed more crop yields, relying on open wells as their only source of irrigation. This resulted in low agricultural income and a need for more local employment opportunities, particularly during summer.

The biodiversity in the area could have been better, with only a few wild species of plants and birds.

Implementation of Mission100 Sarovar: Transforming Lives and Landscapes

We initiated Mission100 Sarovar - a comprehensive project to plant 2.5 million trees and to develop 111 lakes in Gujarat and India. This initiative is a testament to our unwavering dedication to sustainability and community welfare.

We ensure that each endeavour contributes to a greener, more equitable future. We diligently adhere to the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) concerns defined by the United Nations,

Post-Implementation Scenario: A Journey of Transformation

The impact of our water conservation and afforestation efforts has been remarkable, transcending boundaries and positively transforming the region in multiple ways.

Land: The areas surrounding our initiatives now boast increased green cover extending up to 18 kilometres. Our meticulous selection and cultivation of new plant varieties have proven resilient even in harsh summer conditions. Additionally, we have witnessed a significant reduction in soil salinity, improving its overall quality.

Water: Through our endeavours, we have ensured a year-round water supply for domestic and irrigation purposes. The water table has risen from a depth of 500 feet to a mere 20-30 feet during the monsoon season, benefiting countless individuals and farmers. Moreover, water quality has vastly improved, with the TDS levels reduced from 1500 to 450-500 and continuing to show annual improvements.

Farming: Our interventions have led to a staggering five-fold increase in farming output, substantially boosting the agricultural sector.

We have empowered over 200,000 farmers through capacity-building initiatives, equipping them with the knowledge and resources necessary for self-reliance. Notably, crop production, such as cotton, has tripled, significantly enhancing economic opportunities for farmers and the underprivileged. As a result, our project area has evolved into a popular tourist destination within the Amreli District of Gujarat, attracting over 2000 visitors during weekends and festivals.
